Objective: Pursue Targeted Employment Growth

Data shows that the vast majority of new jobs in any region are created by existing firms. In Southeastern Minnesota, a significant portion of those new jobs are created by the Mayo Clinic, the largest private employer in Minnesota. While our region can leverage Mayo’s size and influence in creating jobs beyond healthcare, we also will benefit from a focused effort to stimulate growth in other targeted business sectors. These business sectors represent the most important existing and the most promising emerging business opportunities for our region. They are:

Strategies:

  1. Create leadership teams to oversee Southeastern Minnesota’s targeted business sectors
  2. Leverage business retention and expansion visits to identify and capture insourced spending opportunities
  3. Expand local purchasing opportunities from the region’s largest employers
  4. Study the potential to create a master development plan for a Rochester Innovation District
  5. Pursue new research partnerships between the region’s most innovate employers and research institutions
  6. Create and sustain a regional food hub development program
  7. Connect visitors to regional tourist attractions and amenities

What we are working on:

The Economic committee will hold a series of Industry Roundtables throughout the next year. The first roundtable was food and dairy on March 1, 2016. The second will cover manufacturing on May 31, 2016.

In September 2015, Journey to Growth and two of its Implementation partners hosted a regional familiarization tour through DEED for a national site selector from The Prager Company, Chicago. The Implementation partners included the Red Wing Port Authority and the Port Authority of Winona.

The Journey to Growth Partnership is a private/public partnership funded by businesses, institutions, and government whose mission is to stimulate economic growth and prosperity and a higher quality of life for all citizens of southeast Minnesota.
