Extreme increase in mental complaints among trainees
According to a recent study by the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), trainees are increasingly suffering from psychological problems. Absenteeism due to depression, adjustment and stress disorders, etc. has increased significantly above average among trainees in recent years. Health promotion in the company has to take more care of trainee health, warns the Techniker Krankenkasse.
According to the TK, absenteeism due to mental health problems has increased by 108 percent since the year 2000 among trainees between the ages of 16 and 25. When considering all age groups, the increase was an average of 88 percent. "For years, the health insurance companies have recorded an increase in absenteeism due to psychological reasons," but this is even more pronounced among trainees than the average number of employees, reports the TK. One reason is the high level of stress among young professionals, which in turn is at least partly due to their media consumption.
Absenteeism due to psychological issues increased significantly
The figures in the latest health report from the Techniker Krankenkasse show that absenteeism due to mental disorders has increased significantly in recent years. "In many areas - with diagnoses, hospital stays, medication prescriptions and sick leave - we see a significant increase in mental complaints," emphasizes Dr. Jens Baas, CEO of TK. The possible causes for this are diverse. This would make diagnoses better today and there would be better medical care, but also "our lifestyle, how we work, how we deal with stress and how and whether we ensure balance, plays a major role."
Depression in third place on sick leave
The absenteeism among the trainees was generally lower than average (11.5 absenteeism versus 14.8 absenteeism), but the psychologically induced absenteeism shows a contrary development, according to Dr. Thomas Grobe from the Institute for Applied Quality Promotion and Research in Health Care (aQua), which evaluated the TC data. "Whilst absenteeism has been stagnating at a high level for a total of three years, it continues to increase in the youngest group of employees," reports Grobe. Depression ranks third among the main causes of sick leave behind respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.
Data from 4.8 million insured persons evaluated
According to the TK, the sick leave and pharmaceutical prescriptions of 4.8 million working people insured with the TK were evaluated for the 2017 health report. This year's focus is on the health of trainees. The basis for this is the data from 187,000 trainees insured with TK between the ages of 16 and 25. These show an extremely alarming development in mental illnesses, which indicates an increased need for action. Here it becomes clear "that we have to take more care of the health of the youngest group of employees," said Dr. Jens Baas.
Digital media a stress factor?
The experts also cite media consumption as the cause of the high level of stress among young professionals. “Many like to end their workday with digital media. That alone does not have to be harmful per se. But trying to use them at the same time or alternately and thus being constantly distracted and interrupted takes strength from the brain and at the expense of regeneration, ”explains the neurologist Dr. Volker Busch in the TK press release. Effective relaxation of the brain only occurs through the concentrated depth of a matter, sinking into a book, a conversation or enjoying nature.
