However, the power of the sun is often underestimated: As soon as you walk in the park for an hour, your skin tenses and your face is bright red. It is best not to let it get that far, because every sunburn is added to your own skin account and increases the risk of developing skin cancer. If it does happen, various natural home remedies and medicines can help.

Home remedies and medication can help
If the skin has been burned by the sun, acetylsalicylic acid - ASS for short - can help, Munich dermatologist Christoph Liebich from the Professional Association of German Dermatologists said in a message from the dpa news agency. Because "sunburn is ultimately an inflammation," says the doctor.

Envelopes with curd cheese or yogurt are also suitable as home remedies for sunburn. These have a cooling and pain-relieving effect. "But the damage is still there," said Liebich. Only the pain can be contained.

The advice "curd helps" is not shared by everyone. Claas Ulrich, senior physician and head of the skin tumor center at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, said in an earlier dpa report: "Of course, this is not something that can really be recommended."

He recommends gently cooling the inflammation, for example with the help of a cooling lotion, a care milk or cream.

It is of course better to keep the skin from sunbathing.

Ensure adequate sun protection
According to experts, you should always use the UV index as a guide and lubricate with sunscreen.

It is important not to save when applying cream and to use a high sun protection factor.

"For adequate protection, the skin needs around two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin," explained Liebich.

That is at least 25 grams in an adult man. "If you apply too little, a sun protection factor 50 quickly becomes a factor 20." The cream has to be reapplied every three hours. "Even if it says that it is waterproof."

It should be noted that there is a special danger when bathing because sand and water reflect the harmful UV radiation.

Good sun protection is particularly important for older people because their skin is more sensitive.

Some people forego protection
However, there are people who find it extremely important to get tanned. You therefore do without a high sun protection factor or sun protection in general.

Even though tanning is not healthy. Liebich also sees it this way: "But tanning is actually a skin disease," said the doctor.

Everyone should be aware that exposure to UV light not only causes the skin to age faster, but also increases the risk of skin cancer. (ad)
