Men in Baden-Württemberg are less likely to develop lung cancer
Lung cancer is still underestimated, according to health experts. Since most of the illnesses are related to tobacco use, it is pointed out how important it is to quit smoking. The fact that this makes sense is also shown by the figures from the current report by the Baden-Württemberg Cancer Registry. In the southwest of the republic, fewer men smoke than the national average - and they are less likely to develop lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death
Life expectancy with cancer has increased across Europe. However, around every fourth person in the European Union still dies of cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Europe. This disease is also so dangerous because it is often only recognized late, because symptoms of lung cancer are often not noticed. Experts believe that around 85 percent of illnesses are related to tobacco use. This also explains why men in Baden-Württemberg are less likely to develop lung cancer.

Few cancers responsible for the majority of initial diagnoses
The new report of the Baden-Württemberg Cancer Registry has been published: In the diagnosis years 2012/2013, over 90 percent of new cancer cases are recorded and almost all of them are recorded.

PD Dr. Volker Arndt from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), head of the Epidemiological Cancer Registry, said in a message what is striking about new cancer in Baden Württemberg:

“Overall, the results from Baden-Württemberg are similar to the nationwide data. In the southwest, too, the three types of cancer that are the same for both sexes are responsible for over half of all initial diagnoses. "

Prostate cancer accounts for 25 percent of all new cancer cases among men, colon cancer 14 percent and lung cancer. Breast cancer is by far the most common among women with 38 percent of all new cases, followed by colorectal cancer at twelve and lung cancer at seven percent.

Baden-Württemberg smoke less often
However, the team led by Arndt reports a significant deviation from the overall German results: men in Baden-Württemberg are much less likely to develop lung cancer, which accounts for 11.5 percent of all malignant diseases in the "Ländle".

In contrast, the national average is 13.7 percent. This is in line with smoking behavior: only 26.9 percent of Baden-Württemberg are smokers, while in other federal states up to 35 percent of men smoke. The experts refer to data from the 2015 Tobacco Atlas.

The late effects of smoking are also the reason why the lung cancer death rate among women has increased across Germany.

Diseases can often be avoided
Around a third of all cancers worldwide are considered preventable. The risk of cancer can be significantly reduced. When it comes to cancer prevention measures, the fight against smoking is mentioned above all.

“Currently, more than 72,000 cancer cases are attributable to smoking in Germany every year. Tobacco consumption is not only a risk factor for lung cancer, tumors can also develop in the throat and larynx, esophagus, intestine or in the lower urinary tract, ”reported the Center for Cancer Registry Data (ZfKD) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) last year on his Website.

In addition to stopping smoking, there are other ways to reduce personal cancer risk: regular exercise, a healthy and balanced diet, avoiding excess weight and limiting alcohol consumption. (ad)
