Exercising at the weekend is as healthy as daily training during the week

Regular exercise is healthy and makes you fit. Sport is also helpful for losing weight. However, many people fail to complete their training sessions regularly during the week. Scientists have now found that sport is good for your health even if you do it less often - but then it has to be more intensive.

Intensive exhaustion at the weekend
Most experts agree that sport is good for health. Regular exercise can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure or heart attack. In addition, athletes are less likely to suffer from overweight or obesity. However, many people are unable to exercise regularly due to lack of time. Researchers have now found that lack of exercise during the week can be compensated for on weekends.

The risk of premature death is reduced
In the study, the scientists found that people who barely move during the week and instead exercise properly at the weekend reduce their risk of premature death.

As the research team reports in the specialist magazine "JAMA Internal Medicine", weekend athletes were less at risk of dying from cancer or cardiovascular disease compared to inactive people.

Significantly lower health risks
The study was carried out by researchers from Loughborough University in Great Britain, the University of Sydney (Australia) and Harvard University (USA), reports the British university in a statement.

To arrive at their results, the experts examined the health and exercise habits of more than 63,000 adults over the age of 40 and evaluated the deaths that occurred during the study period and their causes.

It was shown that those who exercise regularly reduced health risks significantly and were less likely to develop cancer and cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks or strokes.

Intensive weekend sports even had almost the same health benefits as daily physical activity.

Half an hour a day
The World Health Organization (WHO) advises adults between the ages of 18 and 64 to exercise at least 150 minutes a week in medium intensity or 75 minutes in intensive intensity.

Half an hour of moderate exercise per day is ideal. The ways to work are offered as a training session. However, not all working people can bike to work, and the discipline for morning jogging or a visit to the outdoor pool is not applied by many.

Therefore, some people mainly use the weekend to work out. For this reason, they are also referred to as “weekend warriors”.

Follow or exceed sports recommendations
"It is very encouraging news to know that physical activity is associated with a lower risk of death on only one or two occasions a week, even among people who are somewhat active but do not achieve the recommended level," said Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis of the University of Sydney in a communication.

"Nevertheless, it is always advisable to follow or exceed the physical activity recommendations in order to benefit from the optimal health benefits of exercise," said the expert. (ad)
