Decreased life expectancy in the United States: income and nutrition are jointly responsible
The life expectancy of Germans has reached a record level in recent years. In other countries, too, people live much longer today. In the United States, however, life expectancy has dropped for the first time in over 20 years. Experts are concerned.

People are getting older
People around the world are getting older on average. According to experts, this is often due to medical progress as well as a healthier lifestyle with more exercise, a healthy diet and a reduction in alcohol and tobacco consumption. In the past few years, some researchers have even claimed that life expectancy can be increased tenfold. Others came to the conclusion that the maximum life expectancy was limited to 115 years. In the USA, however, it has now been shown that the increase is not progressing at all. Life expectancy there has fallen for the first time in over 20 years.

Life expectancy in the US has dropped for the first time in two decades
According to media reports, life expectancy for US citizens has dropped for the first time in more than two decades. As reported by the Center for Health Statistics in Washington, a newborn had an average of 78.9 years of life in 2014, but in 2015 it was only 78.8 years.

According to the experts' report, eight of the ten leading causes of death have increased, including deaths from heart disease, strokes, diabetes and drug and drug overdoses. White men and women and black men are particularly affected.

Growing death rates from heart disease
In view of the growing death rates from heart disease, Princeton University economist Anne Case told the Washington Post, "I think we have to take it very seriously."

"This is unusual and we don't know what happened," study author Jiaquan Xu said of the results. "So many leading causes of death have increased."

Income and nutrition play an important role
According to experts, the differences in income and nutrition and unemployment could also be responsible for falling life expectancy. For example, studies have shown that poor people die much earlier.

According to the current report, life expectancy of 65-year-olds has not decreased, while it has been measurably lower for middle-aged or younger Americans.

However, it was positively noted that fewer people died of cancer in 2015. One reason for this is that there is less smoking. And better early detection also plays a role. (ad)
