Studies: Electroacupuncture helps with carpal tunnel syndrome

Electroacupuncture treatment in combination with a nightly wrist splint can easily alleviate symptoms and improve function. This is the result of a study from Hong Kong.

In their randomized and controlled study, the Hong Kong scientists examined 181 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. All patients wore wrist braces for at least 8 hours at night. Half of the subjects were additionally treated with electro acupuncture. They received 13 treatments in 17 weeks.

After 5 and 17 weeks, the electroacupuncture group showed slight improvements in symptoms and function, i.e. mobility and strength. The effect size was small, but detectable. It was also shown that wearing the night braces alone could not improve the symptoms. You can find the study here.
