Extremities

The legs

The legs form the lower extremities of humans and extend from the buttocks to the feet. They are used for locomotion and have to bear the body weight, which can lead to considerable stress and increased signs of wear, especially when overweight. The large joints (hip joint, knee joint) in particular are often affected here. From the bottom down, the leg consists of the hip, thigh, knee, lower leg and foot.

The joints, ligaments and muscles in the legs are not only subjected to considerable forces during sport, which means that they are relatively susceptible to fractures (broken bones), ruptures (torn ligaments) and muscle injuries (strains, torn muscle fibers). In addition, there is possible joint damage in the form of arthrosis (for example, hip arthrosis). In addition, diseases of the cardiovascular system, the nervous system and the internal organs are often reflected in leg complaints. In cardiovascular diseases, for example, blood build-up in the legs is often found, when the nervous system is impaired, numbness in the legs can occur, and swollen legs are often part of the symptoms in kidney and liver diseases.

Thick legs and water in the legs are generally a common ailment for the elderly, but also at work, in which the employees are on their feet all day. However, the swelling often subsides quickly when the legs are relieved or put up. If this is not the case, medical help should be sought promptly, since the complaints can hide serious illnesses such as leg vein thrombosis. (fp)
