Listeria detected in corned beef

Specht Fleischwaren Vertriebs GmbH & Co. KG from Borgholzhausen in North Rhine-Westphalia is recalling the product "German corned beef top quality 3% fat" from the "Hofmaier" brand with the veterinary control number EV1519 with all best before dates including July 23, 2018. The article was offered at the discounter Netto. "Listeria was found in a sample of the affected article as part of an investigation," the company wrote in a statement.

Bacteria can be dangerous for certain groups of people

Listeria are bacteria that are generally harmless to healthy adults. However, they also trigger so-called “listeriosis” in some people.

The pathogens can cause flu-like symptoms such as nausea, muscle pain, chills, diarrhea and fever.

According to health experts, the germs can also lead to brain inflammation or blood poisoning in certain risk groups (pregnant women, infants, people with weakened immune systems). Pneumonia and heart valve inflammation have also been described.

Deadly forms are also possible. For example, a few months ago in Australia five people died after eating melons contaminated with listeria.

Goods can also be returned without presentation of the receipt

According to the meat products company Specht, the affected goods were immediately taken out of sale.

Customers who have purchased the product can return it to the respective shops without a presentation of the sales receipt for a refund of the purchase price. (ad)
