New portal for eating disorders should help those affected

The exchange of experiences and information among those affected by eating disorders is intended to promote the healing process for anorexia nervosa and bulimia. For this purpose, the portal publishes a new module on the subject of eating disorders. Those affected should find help, hearing and support. On the internet platform, people report on their life with the eating disorder. But other clinical pictures are also discussed here.

The people who report their illnesses here are all in different stages of the illness and share their experiences that they have gained in the course of the illness. The individual fates are the focus and are also edited with video, audio and text extracts.

From those affected for those affected

The portal reports on experiences with eating disorders. Affected persons, relatives and experts are involved. There are currently testimonials from 19 women between the ages of 18 and 63 on the portal who have lived with the eating disorder between one and 40 years. While some are still acutely affected, others have already overcome their condition.

Everyday eating disorders

The individual reports deal with various topics ranging from the beginning of the eating disorder, its effects on everyday life to various experiences with offers of help. Some of the interviews with those affected can be viewed as video or listened to as audio.

Additional modules available

The new module on eating disorders is the tenth area of experience on the platform that has been around for eight years. The portal was created by the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Freiburg and by the Institute of General Medicine at the University of Göttingen. In addition to experiences with eating disorders, information about other clinical pictures is exchanged here. These include:

  • Chronic pain,
  • Type 2 diabetes,
  • Epilepsy,
  • Breast cancer,
  • Prostate cancer,
  • Colon cancer,
  • inflammatory bowel disease,
  • ADHD in children and adolescents.

Recognize the problem

The portal wants to help those affected to recognize problems and diseases, to accept them and to help them to tackle them. The field reports in the different categories should help. For example, one affected person reports that she had always thought that something was wrong with her eating behavior. However, for a long time she would have assumed that she was alone with her problem.

What happens in the course of an eating disorder

Losing weight, binge eating, nausea and vomiting, hiding and tricks. These are just a few areas that provide information about those affected by anorexia and bulemia. The portal also reports on the changed body image, health consequences and thoughts and feelings.

Message to other stakeholders and professionals

A common advice of those affected is: "Get help!" And is referred to your own positive experiences. Possible points of contact are psychotherapists, clinics, self-help groups, internet forums, online advice or the family doctor. The field reports are intended to help overcome internal and external hurdles, because in many cases an eating disorder does not go away on its own. If food becomes a part of life, you should urgently go to therapy, the portal's experts advise. (vb)
