Healthy strawberries in a refreshingly different way: with balsamic vinegar and basil

Try something new: combine delicious strawberries with balsamic vinegar

The strawberry season is in full swing. The delicious fruits can be harvested in mild regions from May and into September. The berries taste best when they are freshly harvested on the table or put directly in your mouth. But the red fruits can also be combined well with others - for example with balsamic vinegar.

Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits of the Germans

For many Germans, strawberries are the summer fruit par excellence. The fruits are now available in every season of the year, but the goods from the local cultivation taste best. The strawberry season only started a few weeks ago. Experts advise storing the fruit for a maximum of two days. Most Germans prefer strawberries straight. The fruits can also be combined with other foods. With balsamic vinegar, among other things.

Full of healthy ingredients

"Nothing can surpass the fragrance and the full aroma of local fruits because strawberries from market-related production can ripen on the plant until the very end," writes the Federal Association of Producer Organizations (BVEO) in a press release.

"Another advantage is that the ripe fruit also has a higher content of vitamins, minerals and bioactive substances," it continues.

In fact, strawberries are full of healthy ingredients. An adult's daily vitamin C requirements can be covered with just 120 grams of fruit.

They also contain a lot of folic acid and numerous minerals such as potassium and magnesium that strengthen the heart.

Even if you pay attention to the slim line, you can eat strawberries carefree. They contain just 32 calories per 100 grams.

But there is obviously much more health potential in the fruit. For example, scientists from Italy found evidence that an extract from strawberries could protect against breast cancer tumors.

Unusual combination

The most popular are the delicious pure berries. The fruit is also often used for smoothies, cakes or other sweet dishes.

Combining strawberries with vinegar, on the other hand, seems a very daring combination. But the recipe for "balsamic strawberries", which the BVEO reveals on its website, has it all.

You need 250 grams of strawberries, which are washed and cut into slices and then distributed on small plates or bowls. Then add two to three tablespoons of dark balsamic vinegar and three teaspoons of sugar and mix the whole.

The mixture should be left to stand in a cool place for about an hour. In the meantime, wash a sprig of basil, shake dry and pluck the leaves.

"Sprinkle balsamic strawberries with basil, grind them with a little pepper as you like and enjoy," writes BVEO. The sweetness of the fruit is particularly evident due to the acidity of the vinegar. (ad)
