Play football for an hour to practice burgers and soft drinks
The World Cup is imminent. Some go to the pub to watch the World Cup, others prefer to watch the games at home. No matter whether in a cozy home or elsewhere: many football fans often eat unhealthy, high-calorie fast food while watching. Experts explain how long it takes to drain burgers, chips and soft drinks.
More and more people with diabetes
Diabetes is one of the major common diseases in Germany. Around six million diabetics currently live in this country, with around 300,000 new patients every year. Lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet are two essential factors that favor the development of the disease. Both factors will play a major role for many football fans in the coming weeks. After all, most viewers will hardly move during the games and will usually eat unhealthy foods with many calories.
Germans sit on average 7.5 hours a day
The non-profit organization diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid announces at the start of the World Cup in a message that Germany has to get out of the trap.
According to the experts, the Germans sit on average 7.5 hours a day, only every fifth adult complies with the WHO recommendation of 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
The consequences include massive overweight and a steady increase in type 2 diabetes.
A short walk lowers your blood sugar level
"The main causes of type 2 diabetes lie in an unhealthy diet, the consumption of high-calorie foods and a lack of exercise," explained Dr. med. Jens Kröger, CEO of diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid.
"Two thirds of the people in this country do not even move an hour a day in everyday life." The inactivity starts with the little ones.
"Only about every fourth child or adolescent achieves the WHO recommendation to exercise 60 minutes a day," says the diabetologist.
150 minutes of physical activity per week would suffice to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
"A quick walk of half an hour significantly lowers the blood sugar level," said Kröger.
Diabetes can also be prevented by eating properly.
Time to train a fast food menu
In addition to lack of exercise, the consumption of high-calorie foods has a high share in the development of overweight and type 2 diabetes.
Fast food companies and soft drink manufacturers also advertise their products for the World Cup. Many consumers underestimate the energy density of these foods.
A classic fast food menu with 0.4 liters of Coca-Cola plus a Big Mac and a medium portion of french fries contains 1,023 calories, according to the German Diabetes Aid.
"To work out these calories, an adult man would have to play 85 minutes, an adult woman 110 minutes at a time, or take 27,300 or 36,855 steps," Kröger calculated.
For men, this would mean walking briskly along the long side of a soccer field 118 times, women would even have to walk the field 243 times to neutralize burgers, fries and soft drinks. (ad)
