Tobacco consumption is a major health hazard

"Smoking is a major health risk and the leading cause of premature mortality," writes the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Tobacco consumption alone favors twelve types of cancer such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart attack and stroke, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), chronic bronchitis or the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD (smoking lung).

Good reasons for stopping smoking

So there are indeed many good reasons to quit smoking. Some smokers can quit more easily, but most find it very difficult to stop smoking.

Smokers need a firm will to get out of their addiction. Experts believe that cold withdrawal is the best way to stop smoking.

Scientific studies also show that it is worth overcoming the “inner bastard” and staying away from cigarettes.

South Korean researchers recently reported that the heart and blood vessels in particular benefit from stopping smoking.

Successes shortly after smoking cessation

On its website, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) points out other good reasons why it is good for the body to quit smoking:

"The function of the airways improves just three days after the last cigarette," write the experts. The symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are also reduced.

“Blood pressure drops just a week after stopping smoking. Two years after stopping smoking, an ex-smoker has almost the same risk of cardiovascular diseases as a lifelong non-smoker, ”explains the DKFZ.

The success of drug treatment for cardiovascular diseases will also be improved.

But that's not all: "Within a few years of stopping smoking, the risk of illness for most tobacco smoke-related cancers has decreased significantly - the earlier the person stops smoking, the more effectively the risk of illness can be reduced."

According to the experts, ten years after stopping smoking, an ex-smoker is only half as likely to have lung cancer as if he had continued smoking.

In addition, people who keep their hands off cigarettes look healthier: "After discontinuing smoking, the discoloration of the teeth disappears, the skin becomes smoother and fresher, the unpleasant smell of hair and clothing disappears," says the DKFZ.

And: "Ex-smokers become physically fitter, healthier and more resilient."

Prolonged life expectancy

It is never too late to quit smoking: "It is worth stopping at any age - no matter how much and how long you have smoked," writes the DKFZ elsewhere.

“The health benefits of stopping smoking are immense at any age. If you stop smoking, you will extend your life expectancy by an average of 10 years, ”said the experts.

In addition, the quality of life will be significantly improved because the excruciating symptoms of complications from smoking (cardiovascular diseases, COPD, cancer, etc.) are avoided. (ad)
