As of the next flu season, health insurance companies will pay four-fold vaccine
Every year thousands of Germans get the flu (influenza). One way to protect yourself from infection is to get the flu shot. From the coming season, this protection will be provided with a quadruple vaccine. The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) has now decided that.
Protection against infection
If you want to protect yourself from flu, you should strengthen your immune system, keep away from the sick and wash your hands regularly. Protection is also provided by the flu shot, which is recommended by the Standing Vaccination Committee (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), especially for people at increased risk of serious illnesses. In the 2018/2019 vaccination season, the flu shot will be given with a quadruple vaccine. The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) made up of top representatives from doctors, health insurance companies and clinics has now decided this.
Legally insured people can get a quadruple vaccine
According to a press release, following the decision of the World Health Organization (WHO) on the antigen combination of the vaccine for the 2018/2019 season, the G-BA has created the conditions for insured persons with statutory health insurance to use a quadruple vaccine against the seasonal in the future Have the flu vaccinated.
Until now there was no binding regulation for the statutory health insurance companies as to whether a triple or quadruple vaccine should be used for this vaccination. Both options were permitted in accordance with the previous STIKO recommendations.
With the clarification of the vaccination guideline, the G-BA follows STIKO's recommendation that a quadruple vaccine with the current antigen combination recommended by the WHO should be used for the flu vaccination from the 2018/2019 vaccination season.
Manufacturers have enough lead time for production
"Contrary to popular belief, this decision is not aimed at the 2017/2018 vaccination season, but at the upcoming one," said Professor Josef Hecken, impartial chairman of the G-BA and chairman of the pharmaceutical subcommittee.
Due to the lengthy production process, the WHO decides on the antigen combination of the vaccine well before the start of a flu season.
With the decision of the WHO and the decision of the G-BA, the manufacturers now have enough lead time to produce the required vaccine in sufficient quantities by the beginning of the next vaccination season in the coming autumn.
The decision to amend the vaccination guideline will be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Health for review and will enter into force after being published in the Federal Gazette.
Some health insurance companies offer more services
Since April 1, 2007, vaccinations have been compulsory benefits provided by statutory health insurance (GKV). Previously, they were voluntary statutory health insurance benefits.
A basic prerequisite for the inclusion of a vaccination in the statutory health insurance benefits catalog is a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin.
On the basis of the STIKO recommendations, the G-BA specifies the details of the GKV's obligation to provide benefits in the vaccination guideline.
Numerous statutory health insurance companies offer a range of services that go beyond the vaccination directive - e.g. flu vaccinations for insured persons who are not among the risk groups - as voluntary statutory benefits. (ad)
