Health experts warn of "pre-tanning"

Tanned skin is still considered a beauty ideal for many Europeans. This is why some people try to get rid of their pale complexion as soon as the first rays of sun come out in spring. Some even go to the solarium for this. Health experts advise against the so-called "pre-tanning". There is no such thing as a healthy tan. With a tan, the skin tries to protect itself from the UV rays.

Sunbathing is a health hazard

Although experts repeatedly point out that the tan achieved by sunbathing is not healthy, many Germans love to lie in the sun in hot temperatures. The skin burns quickly, especially in people with fair skin. However, this should definitely be avoided and the health risks should not be underestimated. Because every single sunburn is added to your own skin account. This increases the risk of skin cancer. The so-called "pre-tanning" does not help here either. Health experts therefore advise against it.

Tanned skin is no longer considered so attractive

As the Swiss Cancer League wrote in a recent announcement, sun-tanned skin is no longer considered as attractive and healthy as it was a few years ago.

According to the experts, the ideal of beauty is rightly changing, "because there is no such thing as a healthy tan."

A skin that tans fights back. Under the influence of the short-wave and high-energy UVB rays, the pigment cells form the dye melanin, which tans the skin. This is how the skin tries to protect itself from UV rays.

The longer-wave UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage the connective tissue. The skin loses elasticity. The result is wrinkles, age spots and premature skin aging.

"Pre-tanning is not a suitable means of arming yourself against the summer sun," warns the Cancer League. It only harms the skin.

Solariums increase the risk of cancer

The experts strongly advise against visiting a solarium: tanning does not help. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified solariums in the top category of cancer risks.

UV rays are the main cause of skin damage and development
of skin cancer.

The incidence of skin cancer has been rising steadily for decades. A distinction is made between so-called black skin cancer (malignant melanoma) and light skin cancer.

WHO estimates that there are two to three million new cases of light skin cancer and more than 250,000 new cases of malignant melanoma worldwide each year.

According to the German Cancer Society, up to 190,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year in Germany.

Detected early, there is a good chance of successful treatment.

Always pay attention to adequate sun protection

Even now you have to be careful. The strength of the spring sun is mostly underestimated.

To minimize the risk of skin cancer, you have to protect yourself from too much UV rays.

For the months of March and April, the Swiss Cancer League recommends: Do not go out in the blazing sun at lunchtime and apply sunscreen to uncovered skin areas between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A sunscreen should protect against both UVA and UVB rays. In addition, you should always be guided by the UV index.

But be careful: the risk of skin cancer continues to exist despite sun protection. (ad)
