The most popular cooking oil in Germany

The question of which oil is the right one for a healthy diet is being answered by more and more consumers with rapeseed oil. It is now even more popular among Germans than sunflower and olive oil. Indeed, it is one of the most valuable cooking and health oils. The Association of the Oilseed Processing Industry in Germany (OVID) also sees it this way.

Dietary fats don't just provide energy

According to a statement by the OVID, scientists from the University of Hohenheim cleared myths about fats in their diet shortly before the day of healthy eating.

According to the experts, dietary fats not only provide energy, but also play a key role in the human organism as components of cell membranes, thermal insulators or precursors of hormones and messenger substances.

This also coincides with the recommendations of the German Society for Nutrition (DGE), according to which adults should consume around 60 to 80 grams of their food energy in the form of oils and fats every day.

However, the scientists emphasize that vegetable fats are preferable to animal fats and their composition should be taken into account.

The fatty acid spectrum is crucial

"Fat is not the same as fat," says Petra Sprick, Managing Director of OVID. As stated in the communication, Germans are currently consuming too much saturated and too little polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of meat and sausage products.

The Hohenheim scientists therefore recommend that the majority of the dietary fats be absorbed through vegetable oils such as rapeseed or olive oil.

“The decisive factor is the fatty acid spectrum: rapeseed oil provides the almost optimal composition of all vegetable oils. The oil also contains alpha-linolenic acid, a vital omega-3 fatty acid, ”said Sprick.

Numerous health benefits

The benefits of rapeseed oil have also been found in other studies. For example, US researchers reported that rapeseed oil can help break down excess belly fat.

And according to researchers from the German Institute for Nutritional Research (DIfE) in Potsdam-Rehbrücke, it is even better than olive oil for some people.

The German scientists have found that rapeseed oil can improve cholesterol and liver values ​​even more.

In addition, pediatricians have been pointing out for a long time that rapeseed oil is ideal for baby porridge, as it contains a high proportion of fat-soluble vitamins and valuable omega-3 fatty acids.

According to the OVID, around 81 million liters of rapeseed oil went through the counter in Germany in 2016. The German oil mills produced around four million tons in 2016.

Around two percent find their way to the consumer in bottles, but rapeseed oil is used much more often as an ingredient in foods such as frying oil, preserves and margarine. (ad)
