According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of diabetes patients worldwide has been increasing massively for years. The disease continues to increase in Germany as well. With the right nutrition, the disease can often be managed quite well. This is indicated by the German Diabetes Aid.
More and more diabetics in Germany
In Germany, more and more people are diagnosed with diabetes. Many have not known about their illness for a long time. After the diagnosis, those affected are often quickly given medical treatment. But in many cases, a healthy lifestyle is enough to get a grip on the so-called “diabetes”. A balanced and varied diet helps those affected to get their blood sugar under control more easily and to prevent consequential damage. There are no prohibited foods
According to the experts, people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are basically allowed to eat everything. There is no special form of nutrition or prohibited food. However, nutrition plays a major role in the therapy concept.
When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, the same rules apply to diabetics and people whose metabolism is completely healthy: lots of whole grains, plenty of fruits and vegetables and preferably vegetable oils.
"Sugar should not exceed 10 percent of the daily energy," said Michaela Berger, board member of diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid in a message.
"What is new is the recommendation with limited informative value to further reduce the intake of free sugar to below five percent of the total energy intake or about 25 grams (6 weak teaspoons)."
In addition, less than 30 percent of the energy should be consumed in the form of fat, but ideally at least 40 grams of fiber.
The focus is on nutrition
When treating type 2 diabetes, the focus is on nutrition. "About half of all people with type 2 diabetes could do without medication," said Berger.
"People who eat healthy and exercise enough could counteract the insulin resistance that underlies the disease."
A healthy diet also has a positive impact on blood pressure and lipid levels and prevents long-term complications.
"In particular, overweight people with type 2 diabetes should change their diet to reduce weight and thus improve their metabolism," explained the diabetes consultant.
Losing weight can often normalize the insulin level again.

Diet also plays an important role in people with type 1 diabetes. "Here it is important to have a sound knowledge of how many carbohydrates, fats and fiber are in the food they consume," says Berger.
Because people with type 1 diabetes produce little or no insulin of their own, they have to inject the appropriate amount of the hormone insulin.
Since the end of 2016, food packaging in Germany has had to have a list of ingredients and a nutrition label.
"For people with type 1 diabetes, the information is essential in order to dose the daily insulin injections correctly and to keep the sugar metabolism stable," stressed Berger.
Sufficient exercise is also fundamentally important, which also helps to lower high blood sugar.
The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week - or alternatively 75 minutes of intense exercise. For this purpose, sports such as jogging, Nordic walking, cycling or even walking or dancing are available. (ad)
