Broccoli is one of the so-called flowering vegetables and is rated as a particularly healthy vegetable variety due to its ingredients. Broccoli can score with numerous secondary plant substances such as the flavonoids, but also with minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium and sodium. The cruciferous plant also contains vitamin C, various B vitamins and beta carotene.
Among the positive health effects of broccoli are the cancer preventive effects, the strengthening of the immune system and eyesight, as well as the normalization of the blood sugar level in diabetes. Broccoli can also be eaten raw, but in this country it is more common to eat it in cooked form. To ensure that as many healthy ingredients as possible are preserved, a method that is as gentle as possible (steam cooking) should be selected for the preparation. (fp)
