Mild weather: hay fever symptoms even in winter?

Mild winter favors early pollen: first symptoms of hay fever possible

When the nose runs in winter, most people think of a cold quickly. But the cause of this can also be an allergy. Because of the mild temperatures, the pollen count has already started. Health experts advise treating hay fever early.

Mild temperatures ensure early pollen count

"The mild temperatures of the past few weeks are causing an early pollen alarm for 18 million allergy sufferers in Germany," writes the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB). According to the experts, the 2018 pollen season has started. Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml also explains in a current message: "Hazel and alder pollen are already flying". Health experts therefore advise not to confuse the allergy with a cold and to treat hay fever early.

Winter exposure is significantly lower

It is no longer so unusual that the season starts in winter, because it has been shown for years that the pollen is flying earlier and earlier.

“However, the load in the winter months is considerably lower than in the main flowering season in spring and summer. Then far more people are affected by the pollen count, ”says Huml.

Especially in sunshine and wind, allergy sufferers experience problems such as frequent sneezing, itchy eyes, difficulty breathing and coughing.

If the symptoms are not too severe, home remedies for hay fever, such as a saline solution, can be helpful. Drugs are sometimes recommended for more severe symptoms.

Treat hay fever early

According to health experts, hay fever should always be treated early, otherwise chronic asthma could develop from it.

“Unfortunately, asthma as a result of an undetected allergy is not uncommon: around 40 percent of those affected develop chronic bronchial asthma after eight years - if the allergy is not treated by a doctor,” explains Huml.

It is therefore advisable to talk to your family doctor promptly if you suspect an allergy and, if necessary, to make an appointment with the allergist. (ad)
