E cigarette

E-cigarettes and electric cigarettes became increasingly popular as an alternative to conventional cigarette consumption in the mid-2000s. A so-called liquid is evaporated in them, whereby different flavors of these liquids are available and not all of them have a nicotine content. Basically, the e-cigarette is rated as less harmful compared to conventional smoking, but this does not mean that it is harmless. In various studies, considerable health risks were found when using the e-cigarette, but these were closely related to the vaporized liquid.

The health risks of e-cigarettes discussed include, for example, erectile dysfunction and impairments of the cardiovascular system, heart attacks and strokes. Skin irritation in children from contact with the e-cigarette vapor is also a discussed risk. In addition, it remains unclear to what extent e-cigarettes are a possible way to start tobacco use. Young people in particular are suspected that the inhibition threshold for tobacco consumption could be reduced here. (fp)
