The symptoms of dengue fever

Many holidaymakers are drawn to exotic travel destinations with a tropical climate. Unfortunately, diseases that are not native to Germany also occur more often. This includes dengue fever. Dengue is widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, South and Southeast Asia and Africa. The virus infection is transmitted both by a bite of the diurnal Asian tiger mosquito and by the Aedes mosquito. In Southeast Asia and Africa, monkeys can also carry viruses. The incubation period for dengue fever is three to fourteen days. Symptoms may include headache and body aches. An itchy rash can also occur in some patients. The majority of those affected survive dengue fever without further consequences, but the following infections can result in life-threatening shock.

Dengue fever - prevention and long-term consequences

Since there is no vaccination or medication for this tropical disease, prevention is a priority. This mainly consists of avoiding mosquito bites in the corresponding areas. Light-colored clothing, mosquito nets and mosquito repellent with the active ingredient DEET (diethyltoluamide) are suitable for this purpose. The big danger with dengue fever is not the initial infection. If a person is often affected by this disease, there is a risk of dengue shock syndrome. This leads to a severe drop in blood pressure that requires immediate medical treatment. Without medical help, the shock is fatal in 40 to 50 percent of cases. (vb)
