What tastes better and what is healthier? This is a question many people ask about espresso and conventional filter coffee. Does coffee draw water from the body? Is coffee diuretic? A few answers will surprise you.

After a good meal, a cup of espresso tastes particularly good. The earthy and chocolatey stimulant has its home in the Italian metropolis of Milan and was initially only prepared in bars and upon direct request. Therefore, the word "espresso" also means a "dish prepared for the guest".

In addition to the roasting, the preparation of the stimulating hot drinks also differs. Pressure is crucial for espresso. The water must flow through the previously pressed ground coffee at a minimum of 9 bar at a temperature of 88 to 94 degrees Celsius. Since the contact time is short, 25 to 30 seconds, the degree of grinding must be fine. The pressure creates a velvety-soft crema on the surface.

The specialty is served in a thick-walled, preheated cup. When preparing coffee, a higher water temperature is reached at 92 to 96 degrees Celsius, and no artificial pressure has to be generated. The ground coffee is coarser because it is brewed with water for minutes.

What has more caffeine?
By the way, it's a misconception that a cup of espresso gives your body more caffeine than a cup of coffee. The caffeine levels are similar. A cup of coffee with 150 ml contains between 50 and 100 mg of caffeine. A cup of 50 ml espresso is between 50 and 150 mg of caffeine. If you were to compare similar amounts of drink, the caffeine content of an espresso would be higher.
