Liposuction is not a method of losing weight
The desire that superfluous pounds simply dissolve in the air is easy to understand. Liposuction comes close to this wish, many think. But experts warn in detail that liposuction is not a suitable way to lose weight. A study by the University of Colorado also confirmed that much of the extracted fat will return within a year if patients do not change their lifestyle.
The German Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (DGÄPC) also advises against liposuction as a measure for weight loss. "Contrary to what many patients imagine, liposuction is not a method of losing weight," the experts write on their website. It is also not a miracle cure for cellulite. Liposuction is not used to optimize body size. Rather, it is about the removal of disproportionate fat accumulations that do not harmonize with the overall appearance. As a rule, liposuction is performed for purely aesthetic reasons. Liposuction is only recommended as a therapy for a few, rarely occurring clinical pictures with increased fat storage.
Liposuction is not for the overweight
"Many people are mistaken about liposuction," warned Prof. Riccardo Giunta, director of the Department of Hand Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Surgery at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, about "Focus Online". Liposuction is not for overweight people who want to lose weight like this.
Reasons against liposuction
Liposuction is not to be taken lightly. "Aesthetic-plastic treatments are medical interventions with all the associated risks," warns the DGÄPC in a guide. Like any other doctor, plastic surgeons are only allowed to carry out treatments if they can be medically justified. This means that the intervention must be suitable for reducing or eliminating the existing suffering. Cheap offers should also be used with caution. According to DGÄPC, ensuring a good standard in medicine is always associated with certain costs. If you advertise with low prices, you should carefully ask where the provider is saving. In any case, serious medical specialists would not aggressively advertise with vouchers or cheap offers.
Methods of liposuction
According to Giunta, the gentlest process is water jet technology. With this method, the tissue is anesthetized with a “water jet”. During the exposure phase, the liquid swells the fat cells. Then suction cannulas would be inserted. The loosened fat is then sucked off with the water jet using the vacuum method. According to Giunta, the ultrasound method is also common. The problem zone is connected to a device that emits ultrasonic waves. The waves would melt the deep fat cells while leaving the top layers of skin intact. Ideally, the fat is excreted by the body itself.
Health insurance companies do not pay
"An aesthetic liposuction on the lower abdomen can cost around 1000 euros," explains Giunta. The cost of liposuction would depend on the size of the problem area and the length of the operation. A more extensive intervention is often expensive for several thousand euros. According to the expert, the health insurance companies do not cover the costs. (vb)
