According to health experts, absenteeism due to mental illness has been increasing for years. Unsurprisingly, January is the month when there is more sick leave from depression than any other. After all, it is usually gray and dark at the beginning of the year.

More and more people suffer from mental illnesses

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people with depression has increased significantly worldwide. In Germany and the EU too, more and more people suffer from mental illness. According to the German Depression Aid, more than five million people in Germany suffer from unipolar depression that requires treatment. As a message from the health insurance company DAK-Gesundheit shows, the number of people affected is increasing right now at the beginning of the year.

After Christmas and New Year there is a mental low

Depression follows Christmas and New Year for many Germans: In January there are more sick days with this diagnosis than in any other month. This is shown by a current analysis of DAK health from 2013 to 2016.

The percentage of yellow notes with this diagnosis was ten percent in January 2016. According to the DAK statistics, sickness reports reached their lowest level in the Christmas month of December.

"In January, many people experience a mental low because the Christmas holidays are over and the days are mostly gray and dark," explains Dr. Hendrik Spohr, doctor at DAK-Gesundheit.

“That is why the number of sick days due to depression after the turn of the year increases. We have been observing this tendency for several years. ”The number of sick days decreases in summer before it increases again in the autumn months.

Advisory hotline for insured persons of all health insurance companies

In response to the analysis, DAK-Gesundheit offers a telephone hotline for those affected and their relatives. Medical experts advise on January 17th between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Depression can become chronic

If depression is not recognized in time and treated consistently, it can become chronic. Treatment is traditionally carried out with medication (antidepressants) and psychotherapy.

But sport also helps against depression.
