Bisphenol A (BPA) is the best known compound from the group of bisphenols. BPA is mainly used in the manufacture of plastics and is contained in plastic bottles, foil packaging and other everyday items. The BPA can be released from these materials and then absorbed by humans. The substance has various negative effects in the human body, and possible impairments in early childhood development and fertility disorders are also discussed. The use of BPA in the manufacture of baby drinking bottles has been prohibited in Germany since 2011. However, other countries (see France) are much further and have generally prohibited BPA in food packaging. (Fp)
