Eye drops are used to treat acute eye irritation and eye diseases such as conjunctivitis or corneal inflammation. A distinction must be made between eye drops, which, due to their special viscosity and ingredients, produce a physical effect of moistening, and eye drops, which are provided with other active ingredients such as antibiotics. While the former are sold freely, the latter are classified as prescription drugs. Eye drops with a physical effect are used against dry eyes, whereas eye drops with other active substances are usually used for eye diseases. However, there is also a risk of side effects and there are certain contraindications that may need to be clarified with a doctor before use. (fp)
