The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linolenic acid are particularly valuable. It also contains minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and phosphorus, as well as vitamins from the B group and vitamin E.
Health benefits of walnut confirmed in studies
Numerous scientific studies have also shown how healthy the walnut is.
For example, scientists at Louisiana State University (USA) found that walnuts can promote intestinal health and prevent colon cancer.
Spanish researchers reported that eating these nuts daily can lower LDL cholesterol levels.
And a study was published in the "Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology", the "FASEB Journal", according to which walnuts can offer protection against type 2 diabetes despite their high fat content.
Consume regularly, but in moderation
It is best to eat the walnut regularly, but in moderation - whether as a snack, in a salad, in a pesto or sometimes in a dessert.
As the BZfE writes, the fine aroma harmonises very well with cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate and marzipan as well as with fruits such as bananas and grapes.
Walnuts are processed into ice cream and brittle, for example, while shelled and ground nut kernels are often used for baking. Cold pressed walnut oil is of very high quality and ideal for the cold kitchen.
Store walnuts dry
The original home of the walnut is in Asia. Today, the tree, which is up to 25 m high, is cultivated worldwide in countries with a temperate climate.
The main offer time for shelled dried walnuts is from October to January, with the main supplier countries being the United States and France. The best choice is whole nuts with an undamaged shell that feel heavy.
In Germany, the walnuts ripen in September and October. Domestic goods come mainly from litter and home garden cultivation and are sold during this time through weekly markets and specialty shops. In a dry, airy place they can be kept for several months. (ad)
