Manufacturing is a broad target sector including existing and potential opportunities in the fabrication, processing, or preparation of products from raw materials and commodities. For the purposes of the Journey to Growth initiative, this target sector includes all products outside of the Food Processing, Medical Technology, and Computer System and Design Production target sectors.
Southeastern Minnesota is home to a strong and diverse base of Manufacturing target sector businesses including transportation equipment, fasteners, furniture, machine tooling, and toys. Manufacturing businesses are key in Southeastern Minnesota because of their competitive wages and impact on the economy. For example, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) reports that average wages for manufacturing jobs in the US are about 24% higher than the average wage for all other industries combined. And, per NAM, for every $1 spent on manufacturing, $1.37 is returned to the economy, which is the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector.
